The Skeptics Syndrome

Abstract
“Skeptics” and their organizations are self-proclaimed defenders of science against perceived pseudoscientific threats including all kinds of “paranormal” belief systempp. In 1998 a paper called “The Skeptics Syndrome” was published by Edgar Wunder, analyzing structural problems in the German Skeptics organization GWUP from a sociological point of view. In conclusion, the paper argued the “skeptical” movement is integrated by a fixed ideological disbelief system, resulting in multiple biases when it comes to evaluate results or assumptions of parascience, frontier science or heterodoxies in science. Following a reprint of the “The Skeptics Syndrome” (1998) Edgar Wunder discusses what changes happened in the “skeptics” movement in the last 22 years and if the arguments put forward in 1998 still hold.

Abstract
This is the experience report of a skeptic who encounters the skeptical movement. The field of activity of this society is the promotion of scientific and critical investigations in an open discourse. But soon he discovered inconsistenciepp. The internal customs of the community deviates from the original intentionpp. Conspicuous are groupthink, self-conceit and the inability to define clear goalpp. The main reason for the inconsistencies are certain basic principles: metaphysical naturalism and its concept of truth. There are ways out of these difficultiepp. First steps in a new direction become visible.

Abstract
„Skeptiker“ und ihre Organisationen sind selbsternannte Verteidiger der Wissenschaft gegen eine wahrgenommene Bedrohung durch Pseudowissenschaften, worunter auch alle Arten „paranormaler“ Überzeugungssysteme subsummiert werden. Im Jahr 1998 erschien ein von Edgar Wunder verfasster Text „Das Skeptiker-Syndrom“, der strukturelle Probleme der deutschen „Skeptiker“-Organisation GWUP aus soziologischer Perspektive analysierte. Im Ergebnis wurde argumentiert, die „Skeptiker“-Bewegung werde durch ein ideologisch fixiertes disbelief-System zusammengehalten. Daraus resultierten zahlreiche Verzerrungen bei der Evaluation von Befunden oder Annahmen aus dem Bereich der Parawissenschaften, aus den Grenzbereichen wissenschaftlicher Forschung oder im Umgang mit Heterodoxien im Wissenschaftsbetrieb. Im Anschluss an einen Nachdruck des „Skeptiker-Syndroms“ diskutiert Edgar Wunder, welche Veränderungen in der „Skeptiker“-Bewegung inzwischen stattgefunden haben und ob die von ihm vor 22 Jahren vorgebrachten Argumente nach wie vor stichhaltig sind.

Abstract
Dies ist der Erlebnisbericht eines Skeptikers, der auf die Skeptikerbewegung trifft. Das Betätigungsfeld dieser Gesellschaft ist die Förderung wissenschaftlicher und kritischer Untersuchungen in einem offenen Diskurpp. Aber bald entdeckte er Unstimmigkeiten. Die internen Gepflogenheiten der Gemeinschaft weichen von den ursprünglichen Absichten ab. Auffällig sind Gruppendenken, Überheblichkeit und das Unvermögen, klare Ziele zu definieren. Der Hauptgrund für die Unstimmigkeiten sind gewisse Grundprinzipien: der metaphysische Naturalismus und dessen Wahrheitskonzept. Es gibt Wege, die aus diesen Schwierigkeiten herausführen. Erste Schritte in eine neue Richtung werden sichtbar.

Kulturkampf 2.0: Wie deuten wir die Welt und wer ist maßgeblich?

Abstract
Rather undiscovered and unnoticed by most people active in academia and society there seems to have broken out a new kind of „kulturkampf“ or fight for the power of defining the modern world-view. This time it is not about political power, but about intellectual power of interpreting reality. The force behind this is a movement of scientists and intellectuals that calls itself “The Brights”. Their openly self-declared aim is to dethrone all religions from their traditional position and mainstream the naturalistic, scientific materialist world-view that they see as the only valid way of looking at the world. Thus, they attempt defining reality, by a plethora of smaller and larger campaigns. One example is the well known London ”Atheist Bus Campaign”. But more important is the attempt to define reality through the widely used online encyclopedia Wikipedia. This feels a bit like the first movement of enlightenment, when the philosophes started to use the Encyclopédie as an instrument of interpreting and defining the world. In contradistinction to this original movement of enlightenment this modern impulse is actually deeply hostile to the tradition of enlightenment, as the unreflected adherence and proselytizing for a materialist worldview is opposed to the principle of openness characterizing science and the principle of reflexive critique inherited from the enlightenment movement.

Abstract
Bewitched, Cursed, Possessed? Explanatory Models, Differential Diagnostic and Therapeutic Considerations for Dealing with People who Report Internal Presences
Humans have always reported feelings of being influenced and of being bewitched or possessed and thus try to seek help at counseling centers or providers on the life aid market. After a necessary clarification of the terminology, this article first summarizes in a very abbreviated overview the state of research on the experience of internal presences. On the basis of a case study we show a prototypical course and describe the genesis of the so-called “Bewitching Syndrome”. This is not an individual case description, but the stylized individual case serves to illustrate a prototypical course. This article is primarily based on the experience of the authors from their respective counseling practice and could serve as a suggestion to make further comparisons with the pathogenesis of the “Bewitching Syndrome” described by them as a hypothesis. The article would like to contribute to a better understanding of those affected and at the same time also provide assistance in dealing with people who report internal presences. A differentiation from psychopathological diagnostics or a reference to intersections is suggested and seems to be particularly important, since in the appearance a certain proximity to some mental disorders arises and only a look at the genesis reveals differences and peculiarities of the “Bewitching Syndrome”.
